A Guide To Storing Your Treasures

Hello, my name is Pete Stone. Over the years, I have met a lot of interesting people and we have exchanged gifts. Many of these gifts are very unique and irreplaceable, with some being custom-made or created by the gift giver himself or herself. The problem is that I live in an apartment that is not very large. My only solution to this problem is to purchase storage space. There is an art to using a self-storage unit that I have discovered. With the right storage techniques, your belongings will last. Because I have learned so much, I have decided to create this blog to share my knowledge with anyone who needs it.

Run an Online Store out of Your Home? Tips for Using Storage for Excess Inventory

If your online store has started to grow beyond your home office space, you may be wondering where to put all your excess inventory while it is waiting to be sold. A self storage unit can be the answer to your problems, letting you temporarily store inventory until you are ready to ship it off. Here are some tips for successfully using a storage unit for holding inventory.

Create an Inventory List

It can be easy to forget which items you have in storage, which is why it will help to create a detailed inventory list. Consider purchasing inventory software that allows you to track items with bar codes and that can even tell you where items are located in the storage unit.

Keeping track of these items is not only an efficient way to run your business; it can also help protect you in an emergency. You'll have a documented list of what is in your storage unit in case the contents of your unit are stolen or damaged. Having this list will make it easy to make an insurance claim if necessary.

Use Inventory Racks

Organization is key if you are going to use your storage unit to hold inventory. You'll want to use racks to store items rather than storing boxes on top of each other. When you need to get into the unit, you'll find it much easier to navigate around different items when everything is on racks.  No more moving towers of boxes around to get to something you need, since it will all be accessible.

To maximize space, you can fill the storage unit with movable racks on wheels.  Clearly label each rack with a letter that aligns with your inventory sheet, and then wheel them in and out of the storage unit to access them.

Use Climate Controls

It may be worth it to rent a storage unit that has climate controls. You do not want to run the risk of items being ruined due to high humidity, which can damage electronic items, foods, wooden items, and paper materials.

Consider Security

Your inventory is a crucial part of your business. Without it, you have nothing to sell your customers. That is why it can be beneficial to rent a storage unit in a facility that has added security measures. These may include needing a key to get into the building, security cameras, and an alarm system.
